A Brief Look at SEO

| November 30, 2019

Search Engine Optimisation, otherwise known as SEO, is an area of ambiguity for most businesses. To simplify it down, SEO focuses on three components: technical, on-page and off-page optimisations. What does this actually mean?

Technical SEO:

This component refers to the indexing and crawling of your site for better search visibility as described by Moz. Generally, this involves areas of code, link building, meta tags, schema markups and more! All of these words put into layman’s terms means an appropriate website structure so search engines (such as Google) recognise you as a reputable source.

On-Page SEO:

Here you can focus on keyword research, meaning terms that are relevant to your business and content, and build this into your website copy strategy. This can range from blog posts, service descriptions all the way to your about page. By having a strong on-page structure, you’re more likely to rank on Google for users looking for what you offer.

Off-Page SEO:

This component focuses on areas external to your website. For example, if other websites are linking back to you, or if you were mentioned by another organisation on their site. This is important as it builds authority with the everchanging Google algorithms.

Enough about definitions, let’s look at the benefits strong SEO structures can bring to your business.

The benefits:

  1. You will rank on search pages for terms relevant to your business and be put directly in front of your users (free of charge!)
  2. Google will begin to recognise you as an authoritative source which is important as you are less likely to be penalised.
  3. Your conversion rates will increase as the right users will be visiting the right content on your site.
  4. You will build brand awareness and credibility with your audience by becoming a thought leader in your industry.

Now that you have a better understanding of SEO and it’s components, getting started can be the hard part. It’s difficult to allocate a full-time resource to SEO if you haven’t already. However, this is such a vital discipline for any organisation to stay up-to-date with digital trends and appear in front of their customers.
